Barricade Prep

Barricade Prep: What I Do Before a Festival or Concert

Getting barricade that coveted front row spot right against the stage is no joke. It takes planning, stamina, and knowing your body. Over time, I’ve figured out a prep routine that works really well for me. Everyone’s body is different, so what works for me might not be ideal for you. Always listen to your body and be safe!

Here’s how I prepare to survive and thrive at the barricade:

A Few Days Before:

  • Hydration starts early. I switch to drinking warm or room temperature water a few days before the show. Cold water can sometimes shock your system, especially in heat or after sweating, so I ease in with warmer temps to keep my body balanced.

  • I make sure all my devices are charged. That includes my phone and all my portable chargers. There's nothing worse than a dead phone at a festival especially if you’re documenting your experience or need it for safety.

The Night Before:

  • I eat a solid, balanced meal with plenty of protein, healthy fats, and carbs. Fueling up the night before helps give my body lasting energy throughout the next day.

  • Sleep is key. Even if I’m excited, I try my best to rest well so I’m not running on fumes.

Day Of:

  • Bathroom first, always. Before I even get in line, I make sure to use the bathroom. If I’m with someone and the line is moving slow, I’ll go again right before gates open. You don’t want to be stuck at barricade needing to pee trust me.

  • Pack smart. My go to items:

    • A small solid sunscreen (liquids can be tricky at some venues).

    • A small clear bag (most places now require clear bags, but I do have a solid body bag I’ve used in the past when allowed).

    • Portable chargers and a charging cord.

    • Sometimes I bring packaged gummies for a quick sugar boost.

    • A small, foldable water bottle (empty until inside, of course).

During the Festival or Concert:

  • If I’m with a friend, we’ll take turns getting water if it’s allowed.

  • Often, security will pass out water cups, especially if it’s a hot day. I always take a cup and sip slowly small sips keep you hydrated without overdoing it.

  • Know your limits. Don’t push your body too far for the sake of a spot. No artist is worth putting your health at risk.

  • Only do this kind of barricade plan if you know your body can handle it. This is what works for me, but it’s not a one size fits all situation. Prioritize your well being over everything else.

After the Show:

  • First stop: bathroom. I always go right after, no exceptions.

  • Then I eat a salty, protein-rich meal to help my body recover think fries with chicken or something similarly satisfying.

  • And, of course, I keep drinking room-temp water to gently rehydrate.

Festivals and concerts are some of the most incredible experiences, but they can also be physically intense. Prepping properly helps me enjoy the music, the crowd, and the adrenaline without crashing halfway through. Stay safe, hydrate, and know your body that’s the real barricade secret.
